Indonesia has many holidays in a year, but the most important one is the Independence Day. This day is a national holiday to commemorate Indonesia's proclamation of independence on 17 August 1945 after being colonized for years. Countries that once colonized Indonesia were Japan, the Netherlands, England, France, Spain and Portuguese. The Netherlands was the country that had colonized Indonesia the longest before Japan took over the power. Japan only colonized Indonesia for three and a half years but has a huge impact on the Indonesian people at that time. Moreover, this also encouraged Indonesian people to unite and fight Japanese colonialism until they finally achieved independence. Every August 17, Indonesian people appreciate and celebrate the anniversary of independence by holding a flag ceremony. After that, various kinds of competitions will be held to enliven the day's event. These competitions include cracker eating, greasy pole, tug of war, egg-and-spoon race, sack race, etc. The competition is not only a physical event but also an expression of the spirit of patriotism, togetherness and struggle. Indeed, because the independence day is very important, Indonesian people always look forward to it with great enthusiasm every year.
